Becoming a Master Glassblower

Becoming a Master Glassblower is not as easy as to learn glassblowing basics. It is not just a title that can be acquired in two or three years. Some gaffers learn glassblowing through apprentice programs or special courses like in the United States. To be able to become a Master Glassblower, you have to be exposed in a scientific environment or research environment for multiple years.

In the United States, as mentioned, gaffers do not usually acquire the title Master Glassblower easily because scientific fundamentals in this craft are not offered in the country. Unlike in some European countries, they offer programs that are usually long and difficult that a gaffer needs to pass before acquiring the title of a Master Glassblower.

Names such as Dan Dailey, William Gudenrath, Dale Chihuly, Ginny Ruffner, Lino Tagliapietra, Dante Marioni and Richard Marquis have exposed themselves in years of scientific training in the craft and are able to successfully garner the title of becoming masters of the craft.

Places in Europe such as Murano, the glassblowing capital of the world, offers programs regarding the scientific and artistic glassblowing techniques. They are usually taken as formal trainings and may took years to finish before becoming a master. It is, indeed, very difficult to have a title like a Master Glassblower. But the time that you will painstakingly use will be worth it.

It is recommended that you first learn glassblowing basics and explore the possibilities in the craft before you consider taking scientific and formal courses in glassblowing.
